Lawyer Jeong Kwang-jin, who lost three daughters in the Sampoong Department Store collapse in 1995 and established a scholarship foundation and devoted himself to donations, passed away on the 19th. 85 years old.

After graduating from Seoul National University School of Law, Attorney Jeong passed the first bar exam in 1963 and served as a judge for 13 years before opening a law practice in 1978 to earn money for the treatment of her blind daughter Yoon-Min Jang (29 years old at the time of her death in 1995).
However, in the collapse of Sampoong Department Store on June 29, 1995, Attorney Jeong lost all three, including Yoon Min, Yoo Jung (28 years old), and Yoon Kyung (25 years old). It has been nine months since Yoon Min returned to Korea after receiving a master’s degree from the University of California at Berkeley in 1988 and became a teacher at the Seoul School for the Blind.
After the disaster, Attorney Chung set up a scholarship foundation by donating 1.35 billion won by adding personal property to 650 million won in compensation. The foundation was named ‘Samyun Scholarship Foundation’ after the names of the three daughters.
The foundation donated it to her eldest daughter’s alma mater and her first workplace, the Seoul School for the Blind. At the time, Attorney Jeong’s wife, Lee Jeong-hee, announced the purpose of the foundation, saying, “Our couple is to replace Yun Min-yi’s unfulfilled dream of becoming a light to the blind.”
His survivors include his wife Lee Jeong-hee and grandson Yoon Sang-won. The mortuary was prepared in Room 3 of the funeral hall at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital. The funeral is on the 22nd at 7:30 am, and Jangji is Yongin Peace Forest Xian Park.
