The Cy Young one-two punch is finally breaking up.
The New York Mets acquired Justin Verlander in the last Stovrig trade. At an age where he’s on the verge of decline, but still at the top of his game, Verlander signed a two-year, $86 million mega-deal with the Mets. The Mets were planning to challenge for the pennant with a powerful one-two punch of Verlander and Max Scherzer.
Verlander and Scherzer are both former Cy Young Award winners. On paper, they looked like they could be the best starters in the league. But the one-two punch didn’t last long. Both Verlander and Scherzer missed a lot of games due to injuries.먹튀검증
In 15 games and 89 innings, Verlander went 5-5 with a 3.24 ERA. Scherzer has also underperformed this year, going 8-4 with a 4.20 ERA in 18 games and 100⅔ innings. Both Verlander and Scherzer have been disappointing.
Both are high-priced players who have not met expectations, which is why trade rumors are swirling. MLB.com, the official website of Major League Baseball, introduced a list of teams that would be interested in acquiring either Verlander or Scherzer if they were to be traded.
MLB.com writes, “The Mets’ one-two punch of Verlander and Scherzer was highly touted before the 2023 season began. “No team would want to face the Mets in the postseason with two of the best pitchers in baseball and a pair of veterans to back them up.” “However, things haven’t gone as planned, and the Mets could be looking to sell either Verlander or Scherzer before the trade deadline,” the report said.
“There are issues to resolve, from salary to no-trade clauses. Both Verlander and Scherzer are due more than $15 million for the remainder of this season and more than $40 million next year. Mets owner Steve Cohen will have his work cut out for him.”
Despite the hurdles, both Verlander and Scherzer are pretty compelling cards. If healthy, they’re still viable starting options. MLB.com projects that seven teams will want them: the Baltimore Orioles, Tampa Bay Rays, San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Dodgers, Houston Astros, Toronto Blue Jays, and Texas Rangers. These are all teams looking to make some sort of postseason run.
