Ohtani undergoes elbow surgery as a pitcher from the 2025 season

Shohei Ohtani (29, LA Angels), who was recently out for the season due to a ruptured elbow ligament and an oblique muscle injury, is on the operating table. The return to full two-hitting duties is in the 2025 season.

On the 20th (Korean time), Ohtani posted on his SNS, “I underwent surgery on my right elbow this morning.” However, the specific type of surgery was not disclosed.

Ohtani then expressed his gratitude to fans for their support, saying, “The surgery went well, and I am grateful for everyone’s prayers and words of comfort.”

Previously, Ohtani left the team in late August after being diagnosed with a ruptured medial collateral ligament in his right elbow. This is a serious injury that requires elbow ligament joint surgery (Tommy John surgery).

Afterwards, it appeared that Ohtani would only appear as a batsman for the remainder of the season, but he recently suffered an oblique muscle injury and chose to sit out the season. He also went straight to the operating table.메이저사이트

Ohtani did not reveal the specific name of his surgery. However, Dr. Neil Elatrace, who performed Ohtani’s surgery, mentioned through Ohtani’s agent, “The pitcher will return in 2025.”

In other words, he can return as a hitter in the 2024 season, but he can also serve as a two-batter starting in the 2025 season. This coincides with the recovery period from Tommy John surgery.

Previously, after undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2018, Ohtani returned as a hitter in the middle of the 2019 season, and appeared as a pitcher in the 2020 season.

Until his injury, Ohtani pitched 132 innings in 23 games this season, recording 10 wins, 5 losses, and an ERA of 3.14. 167 strikeouts.

Additionally, as a batter, he recorded a batting average of 0.304, 44 home runs, 95 RBI, 102 runs, 151 hits, and an on-base percentage of 0.412 and an OPS of 1.066 in 135 games.

Although the season ended early due to an elbow injury, it was a great performance that earned him his second Most Valuable Player (MVP) award.
